Ben Cohen and daughter Isabelle recreate famous poster

Rugby player Ben Cohen, 29, had his hands full when making a decision on who would help him recreate the famous L'enfant Athena poster from the 1980s.  He had to decide which of his 5-month-old twin daughters -- Harriette or Isabelle -- to use in the photograph.

While trying to get the smiling shot, neither girl would cooperate.  However, the camera finally caught the image of little Isabelle smiling up at her daddy.

To view the full image, as well as one with both twins, and to read about Ben's views on fatherhood, continue reading.

Ben can't believe how much he enjoys fatherhood, but admits that he wasn't quite as ready for it as he thought.

I can't believe how much I love fatherhood. I genuinely really enjoy it but nothing quite prepares you for it. One of the hardest things when it comes to looking after a crying baby is knowing what cry is for what, which takes time and patience. I found there wasn't really enough support and information for new dads -- particularly when it comes to having twins.

That reason is one of the reasons that led the new dad agreeing to help recreate the poster.  Proceeds from the sales will benefit the A Problem Shared campaign. The campaign will focus on the role of fathers and the relationship of parents in general.

See the photo with both twins at The Daily Mail.

What’s The Harm?

That's often the fallback of woos when the lack of evidence for their claims is exposed – "what's the harm?" The desperate last argument goes something like, "OK, maybe there's no evidence for [brand of woo], but what's the harm in believing it?" Of course, it's a red herring - paint the skeptics as mean for arguing against their harmless woo, and they can escape having to admit their woo is nonsense.

Of course, woo does cause harm. Just ask Mark Klass or the parents of Shawn Hornbeck, for example. Or the police who are forced to waste time chasing the lame guesses of "psychics" such as Allison Dubois. Don't forget the time wasted by the authorities looking for Elizabeth Smart's dead body where the PsiTech fraudsters claimed it was buried.

So called "alternative medicine" might not harm people directly (homeopathy's only water, after all), but when it causes people to adopt quackery in place of the real medicine that could save their lives, it does do harm.

As I've said before, all skeptics should have responses such as the above, ready.  The Skeptics' Dictionary has a What's the harm? archive that is worth consulting.  Now there is also a website called What's The Harm? It aims to record the numerous instances where woo has actually verifiably caused harm. As they say, "2,427 people killed, 117,711 injured and over $115,461,902 in economic damages". I think the $902 at the end is pretending a degree of accuracy that isn't really there, but minor niggles notwithstanding, it's a great resource.

The site is pretty new and is of course a work in progress. If you have any examples, the webmaster would love to hear from you. The strength and success of this site in my view, will be in submissions they receive from readers, so please consider sending them any cases that you are aware of. Please read their criteria, and check first that the case you're submitting isn't already there. Also, include citations to support your case – it is a skeptics' site, after all. The webmaster has the following tips, if you feel like being proactive and searching for some additional cases with The Google:

Tip 1: Simply combining the name of some form of woo with the word "died" or "injured", often gets amazing results. For example, "naturopath died".

Tip 2: Use the archive search on Google News.  You can search older news at Google. There are tools there to limit the year as well.

Tip 3: Please check the site to see if I already have the case! No sense wasting your time on something I already have. However, if you find a link that is better than the link I'm using on a given story, feel free to send that in.

Tip 4: Pick a category I don't have many cases in. If you don't have a favorite form of woo that you would rather concentrate on, browse the whatstheharm.net topics list and pick a topic I have under 20 cases in. (There are a bunch). This makes it easier to avoid having to scroll through stories I already have while searching.

Tip 5: If you have non-web resources available, use them. Anybody have access to Lexis/Nexis or other non-public databases? Many news web sites cycle their stories very quickly. I've had some of my links go stale just in the four months I've been doing this. But those pay databases keep everything. I'm thinking the same search techniques that I mention above might work well there.

Given time I expect the number of cases included to be huge.

Of course, some woos will argue that, for example, real medicine can also cause harm, medical mistakes are made, wrong medications prescribed etc. That's of course true, but real medicine also has a benefit and so there is a risk / reward trade off. Woo has no benefit and so there is no risk / reward trade off, only risk / risk. This site aims to quantify some of that risk, and certainly shows that woo does, in fact, cause harm.

NPR asks: Why the fascination with celebrity babies?

In a recent radio interview with NPR, Star magazine's Chief Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller credits the rise of the celebrity news weekly magazine for our collective fascination with celebrity babies.  While the notion of paying often already wealthy, already famous people millions of dollars to pose on the cover of a magazine with their newborn children may not sit well with everyone, Bonnie says that -- in a sense -- we only have ourselves to blame.  Of being bump-obsessed, she tells NPR host Renee Montagne that,

I feel like the big turning point was the growth of the celebrity news weekly.  It brought celebrity pregnancies into the mainstream, and we also celebrated them, and we quickly learned that women clearly wanted to see them because our sales went up.

As for exactly why magazines see such a spike in sales when a celebrity baby or pregnancy is featured on the cover, Bonnie says that the answer is simply one of demographics and relativity.  Noting that Star's readership is primarily made up of women during the "prime child-bearing years" of 22 - 42, Bonnie says that readers "feel very close" to pregnant celebrities and those charting new motherhood because "all the things these celebrities are going through, they're going through too."

For more of the interview, click 'continue reading.'

With reports circulating that images of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's twins Max and Emme, 2-weeks tomorrow, are poised to fetch a $4- to $6 million payout from People, Bonnie admits that its unlikely the magazine will ever recoup that figure in increased magazine sales alone.  But the purchase is still a smart one.  Not only can the winning magazine sell additional advertising in advance of the issue hitting newsstands, it also generates considerable buzz among the relevant consuming public.  Says Bonnie,

It is a feather in your cap to be the one that says 'Hey, I've got Brad and Angelina's baby photos.'

When asked by Renee about complaints by some celebrity parents about the sometimes intrusive coverage of their family life, Bonnie replied that privacy still exists -- if privacy is what a celebrity truly seeks.  Says Bonnie,

If you want to be a celebrity than it comes with an interest by the public in your life.  Most actors and actresses know that they don't have to go shopping on Rodeo Drive.  You can have a very low-key life if you want, and never be photographed.

ALF Terrorists

Well, they did it. In November I wrote about how the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) flooded the house of a scientist who was involved in animal research. They said they really wanted to torch the house, but just flooded it instead. What heroes. Via BPSDP to Blue Collar Scientist, I just learned they came back on February 4th and set an incendiary device on her porch. I'm not sure how much damage was caused, but the device apparently did ignite and cause some damage.

Gout Food Guide

Diet is a major control on many health problems including gouty arthritis. Nutritionists have prepared gout food guides to help patients selectively eat foods that are good for gout patients and avoid those that can lead to gout or aggravate its symptoms. Common to all gout food guides is an emphasis on cutting food items rich in purines (a type of nitrogenous compounds).

However, this is not the case with purines found in vegetables. Consumption of low-fat dairy products has been found by some studies to decrease the risk of gout. The generally recommended diet of health experts for gout patients is high in complex carbohydrates (starches), fairly low in protein, and moderately rich in calories (up to 30% maximum) in fat.

Beneficial Foods for Gout

All gout food guides will highly recommend fruits including cherries, apples, strawberries, bananas, and berries. Celery, tomatoes, and vegetables like cabbage, parsley, and green leafy vegetables are also health-friendly for gout patients. Studies show that some vegetarian foods, although relatively rich in purines, do not increase gout risk.

These include spinach, beans, mushrooms, cauliflowers, peas, asparagus, whole-grain breads, and cereals. Eating low-fat dairy products has also been found to reduce the risk of gouty arthritis. However, young women should be careful not to go too low on dairy fats because some studies have related low-fat dairies to an increased risk of infertility among women.

Foods to Avoid

Any gout food guide will warn you against using excess of purines-rich foods, especially those obtained from animal sources or seafood. Some of these, which are ranked as extra high in purines, include: sardines, mussels, heart meat, herring, yeast, and smelt. Then there are foods moderately high in purines but still advised against (especially their excess consumption) like: organ meat (liver and kidneys), salmon, turkey, bacon, mutton, veal, trout, partridge, and scallops etc.

Beverages

According to gout food guides, tea and coffee do not increase the risk of contracting gout. Some herbal teas are used as home remedies for gout, e.g. green tea which contains antioxidants that act as preventive agents against gouty arthritis. Green tea is also effective in reducing the severity of gout symptoms (pain and inflammation). Plenty of pure water (at least eight glasses daily) is the key to removing excess of uric acid from the body.

This significantly brings down the risk of gout (which is the result of uric acid build up in joints and tissues). The beverage that is strictly warned against is alcohol. Since alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body, it increases the risk of gout and aggravates the inflammation of gout-affected areas.

Understanding the Link Between Thyroid and Hair Loss

There are many different cause for hair loss in both the male and female population. Hair loss can be linked to stress, poor nutrition, smoking, pregnancy and even the disease process. Thyroid disease is one disease that effects the growth patterns of hair widely enough to cause significant hair loss.

Hair loss for thyroid patients is one of the most taxing symptoms. Whether the hair loss is due to the thyroid condition or the treatment being given for the thyroid disease, the hair loss remains a noticeable side effect. For patients who have trouble with their thyroid and hair loss, there are several ways to deal with the situation.

Dealing with Thyroid Related Hair Loss

The first place to concentrate is on the prescription medication being taken for the thyroid disease. This medication if given in the wrong dose, can cause significant levels of hair loss. Your prescribing physician, at times in conjunction with a hair loss expert, will be able to tell whether or not the thyroid and hair loss are linked.

If the medication is not to blame, it may just be a normal symptom of your thyroid disease. Many patients with thyroid problems, note having cyclical bouts of hair loss. Natural hair growth cycles include periods of heavy growth when hair can grow up to one half an inch a month. After this growing period the hair tends to rest or lay dormant until it is pushed out and replaced by a new hair from the same follicle. It seems just as hair growth cycles to a stop, more hair falls out when you suffer from thyroid disease than in those who do not.

Natural Treatments for Thyroid Related Hair Loss

When the thyroid patient first notices the hair loss, the time is right to treat the condition. There are several prescription choices for hair loss, but many choose to turn to more natural remedies. Natural remedies for thyroid related hair loss include, evening primrose oil, l-lysine, natural DHT blockers and zinc supplementation.

If patients do desire to turn to prescription medications for hair loss there are two main brand names on the market. Rogaine (also available in over the counter strengths) and Propecia are the two most popular prescription treatments for hair loss in both men and women with thyroid disease.

Thyroid patients who experience significant hair loss are not alone. Hair loss and thyroid conditions are common for many disease patients. Dealing with the hair loss must first begin with a doctor's evaluation, only to be followed by the proper treatment.

Cellulite Treatment: Why You Should Use Exercise for Cellulite

Cellulite is a very common skin condition, one that affects millions of people around the world. Although it does affect a small majority of men it is much more predominant in women. Cellulite can be devastating to a woman's self esteem and self confidence, and so it is very important that any woman dealing with this problem find the best possible treatment method.

Causes of Cellulite

In the past cellulite has been widely interpreted as being a fat disorder that is linked to genetics, but there are a number of other possible causes as well. Cellulite develops as a result of reduced blood microcirculation starving and weakening the tissue in the body, making it more susceptible to cellulite.

Once the circulation in the body is lessened, the capillaries and veins then become weakened and leak blood into the surrounding tissue. As a result this causes an increase in the pressure in the tissue and thus restricts the circulation and fluid drainage.

Exercise for Cellulite: Why it Works

There are a few different effective options when it comes to the treatment of cellulite. Exercise for cellulite is particularly important and advantageous as well because not only will exercise for cellulite help you deal with your cellulite but also it will guard you against a number of other health conditions and leave you feeling and looking at your very best.

There are a few exercises in particular which will be effective for ridding you of your cellulite, and this includes the lateral squat. For this you will need 2/3 kg dumbbells, and you want to start by standing straight with your feet together. Hold the dumbbells evenly on each side of your shoulders with your arms are bent at the elbows, and hold your abs in tight.

To perform this exercise for cellulite you want to move your right leg to the side so that your feet are shoulder width apart, and then squat by lowering your entire body until your thighs are directly parallel to the floor. Now you want to push your body upwards slowly starting from your heels, at the same time moving your left leg to meet your right so that you are in the starting position once again.

Back rows are another effective exercise for cellulite, and doing a few repetitions of these each day will result in dramatic results. You can get rid of your cellulite with a little time and a little effort. You may also want to use anti cellulite creams or lotions in combination with these exercises for the best possible results.

Walnut Creek Teeth Whitening Centers

There is nothing more important to a person's appearance than their smile. A bright white smile will do wonders for a person's self esteem and self confidence and not only change the way that they feel about themselves but also how others feel about them.

Anyone who lives in or around the Walnut Creek area and is interested in having their teeth whitened should know that there are a few great options available here. Although Walnut Creek is a relatively small place, there are some really terrific Walnut Creek teeth whitening centers that are available.

The Options

When it comes to finding a Walnut Creek teeth whitening center one of the first that should be considered is Pope Dental. They are a tooth whitening center that serves the areas of San Francisco and Walnut Creek and which can help improve a person's smile even with just a single visit.

One of their most popular teeth whitening services is the In-Office BriteSmile teeth whitening procedure, which allows people to have the smile of their dreams and in just an hour. BriteSmile works by brightening and whitening teeth by removing stains that have been left behind by soft drinks, coffee, tea, and even pollution.

This Walnut Creek teeth whitening center which understands that excellence in cosmetic dentistry means meeting and then going beyond and exceeding all of their patients' expectations for cosmetic dentistry procedures. The center is run by Dr. Scott Pope who is a cosmetic dentist and who has been specially trained in a wide range of dental procedures.

Another Walnut Creek teeth whitening center that is worth checking out is the practice of Andrew D. Marshall. They offer a variety of teeth whitening services including take home tooth whitening, Zoom! 2 tooth whitening, porcelain dental veneers, and more. They are nestled in a converted ranch style home and feature a small intimate office that integrates excellent customer service.

Aftercare

Regardless of which Walnut Creek teeth whitening center one decides to go with it is still going to be important to be aware of the aftercare that is going to be necessary here. Regular brushing and flossing is going to be important to keep the teeth white and looking their best, and of course habits such as smoking and drinking need to be kept to a minimum because this will result in staining the teeth again. Especially because of how costly some of these procedures can be it only makes sense that one would want to keep their teeth looking their best afterwards.

Restoring Your Hair from the Inside Out with Ultra Hair Care Products

When the average person thinks about hair care products they think about the external variety. They spend hours reading the back of shampoo bottles, experimenting with conditioners, and discussing hair types with their favorite stylist. The average woman spends a small fortune on products that are suppose to eliminate frizz, increase volume, enhance shine, and improve feel. That isn't counting hair cuts, coloring, and the pile of brushes, curlers, combs, flat irons, hair ornaments, and sprays, needed.

What we tend to forget when we are on the endless hunt for the perfect hair care product is that what we eat has a lot to do with how our hair looks and feels. The good news is that Nature's Plus, a company known for its wide selection of supplements, hasn't forgotten.

Nature's Plus has come out with a line of ultra hair care products that are oral supplements that will improve the overall health, feel, and look of our hair. In addition to the oral supplement the Ultra hair care product line manufactured by Nature's Plus has also created a shampoo that was created with our overall hair care in mind.

Oral Supplements

The first in Ultra hair care products are sustained release tablets. These tablets are available in bottles of 60 and 90. Taking just two tablets a day is enough to improve your hair's quality. For people who really feel their hair needs a boost, Nature's Plus also has created the sustained release plus tablets, which have additional MSM added to the formula for an even greater improvement in hair quality, all it takes is just two daily tablets for the supplement to start working its magic.

If you're not particularly fond of popping pills but like the idea of using a dietary supplement to improve the health of your hair, there is an Ultra hair care product just for you, the Ultra hair Thick Shake. This Ultra hair care product is a mix of all the vitamins, amino acids, and minerals needed for a great head of hair. You can purchase the shake mix in a one pound canister or single serving sizes. All it takes is 28 grams (one scoop) to transform your tired worn out hair into a head full of healthy locks.

Topical Supplements

The final product currently available in the Ultra hair care product line is the Ultra Hair Conditioning shampoo. Nature's Plus worked hard to create a shampoo that used a variety of herbs, everything from Chamomile to Evening Primrose Oil, to create a shampoo that would restore the health of all types of hair.

Sudden Hair Loss is Scary, But it Isn't Untreatable!

Hair loss is something no ones looks forward too, especially when there is no warning that it's going to happen. When hair is lost gradually, it gives time for a person to come to terms with it, try different products to see if they work, and basically accept the situation.

But sudden hair loss is a different story, as there is never a warning before the loss is apparent. When sudden hair loss occurs, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and come to the conclusion that there just isn't anything you can do about the sudden hair loss.

However just because you have suddenly lost your hair doesn't mean there isn't anything that can be done about it.

Different Treatments to Try

For hair loss, the treatments available are enormous. You would think this is a good thing, and it would be if there weren't so many products that simply do not work. But because there are a good number of hair loss products that do work, it's important to know your different options.

One options for sudden hair loss treatment is spray treatments. These kind of treatments work by promoting hair growth where you are bald or going bald. Not all of them work, so make sure to check with your doctor and other consumers of the product to verify its credibility.

Hair loss shampoos are a great option for sudden hair loss treatments, as even if the product you first try doesn't fit your needs or work as well as you like, it is bound to have at least a few properties that are beneficial to you. For this reason, it's important to try more than one hair loss shampoo before deciding which one is the best fit for you. Even if the first shampoo you try seems to work well, there may be one that works even better for you.

Finally, sudden hair loss that cannot be treated doesn't mean you can't still look great! Nowadays, wigs have become a staple in today's fashion world and their style and look are so real, many times you can't even tell it's a wig at all. If you have experienced severe sudden hair loss that has left you feeling hopeless and ugly, a wig can be the perfect solution for you.

You can even have wigs custom made to fit your particular head, making it virtually impossible to tell the wig from real hair. There are also hair accessories that can help to hide particular balding spots without having to wear a full wig. This option is great for those with trouble spots, but that still have a good amount of hair on their head.

No Need To Be Frustrated By Marginal Effectiveness Of Many Texas Teeth Whitening

Recently, a company from Texas was in the news because of its novel teeth whitening product line that has become attractive to users and which is also a worthy alternative to other over-the-counter tooth whitening products that are only marginally effective at best and which are also sure to prove to be costly treatments as well. The name of this Texan company is Ultra-White Products, Inc., whose novel teeth whitening products give users an option to buy custom application trays as well as whitening gels that cost a pittance and which are also far superior in their effectiveness as compared to any other Texas teeth whitening treatment.

Ultra-White Products, Inc.

In fact, Ultra-White Products, Inc., is not just a run of the mill company that only helps with just Texas teeth whitening, because it has a worldwide following that consists of more than thirty thousand clients and this company is also owned as well as managed only by dentists which means that you can be sure that its teeth whitening products will be of the very best standards.

Thus, if you have tried out other Texas teeth whitening treatments only to be frustrated by the marginally effective results that you obtained, and also had to suffer considerable discomfort in being treated by one-size-fits-all tooth whitening gel application trays that you would suffer from while using over-the-counter tooth whitening products, then trying out the products of this Texan company would prove to be at least equally effective for your teeth, whether you used Texas teeth whitening treatments, or your teeth whitening was done outside of Texas, as well as even in most parts of the world as well.

And, what's more, there are many Texas teeth whitening clinics that also use this product. In fact, because tooth whitening has become a very popular procedure in most parts of the US as well as in the world, you won't have much difficulty in finding Texas teeth whitening that also use products made by Ultra-White Products, Inc., and there are also other advantages to using teeth whitening products from Ultra-White Products, Inc., because when you go the routine Texas teeth whitening treatment way, it would involve application of bleaching solution to your teeth after which a high intensity light is directed at your teeth which helps in the activation of the bleaching agent though after undergoing all these procedures results are not always guaranteed.

In fact, even though normally one sitting may be enough to see decent results, if you are more fussy about the results, you may need to have more than one sitting with your Texas teeth whitening dentist, and you may also need to consult your dentist to ensure that the procedure used happened to be most suitable for your teeth and thus will provide best results. However, by using teeth whitening products made by Ultra-White Products, Inc., you would see far superior results without needing to visit your doctor more than once, and thus you will have not only saved money, but also would get to see better results as a consequence of using their customizable application trays.

Skin And Hair Care Products That Contain Harmful Chemicals Should Be Avoided

Though using various skin and hair care products is great if you want to ensure that both your skin and your hair remain healthy and looks good as well, you should be aware that some of these products often do contain harmful chemicals that when they contact with your skin can prove to be detrimental to both the skin as well as the hair and worse still, to your health. The trouble is that neither the skin nor the hair can acts as barriers to these harmful chemicals which thus means that the chemicals can enter your bloodstream and further find its way into the rest of your body.

Unwanted Toxicity

If you are not careful about using skin and hair care products that contain such chemicals, these chemicals which get into your body could lead to added toxicity that will then adversely affect your health and also lead to other ill effects such as delaying the body's ability to heal it. It is especially important that you be aware of the more than five hundred ingredients contained in various skin and hair care products that can cause certain reactions such as eczema, psoriasis as well as dermatitis. And, people that work a lot with such chemicals such as hairdressers as well as beauticians often suffer from ill effects of coming into contact with such chemicals and thus will often suffer from some serious illnesses.

So, by coming into contact with such chemicals that could be contained in skin and hair care products that you commonly use, you risk having lung, ovarian, uterine, and breast as well as digestive and even respiratory cancer. Also, you need to be especially careful when using permanent hair dyes because almost eighty-five percent of them can cause your cell genes to change and you would also put yourself at greater risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as well as leukemia and even Hodgkin's disease.

Some of the ingredients contained in skin and hair care products include foaming agents, artificial fragrances, artificial colors, emulsifiers, preservatives, Imidazolidinyl urea, parabens, carrying agents as well as propylene glycol that are quite dangerous for your skin, hair as well as your health and thus should be avoided.

It all boils down to the fact that before you select skin and hair care products to enhance your appearance or even preserve your skin, you need to ensure that they are safe and they should also not contribute to unwanted toxicity in your body, because, just in case you have used unsafe skin and hair care products then you would require getting detoxification done that will help remove the toxic chemicals that entered your bloodstream from use of undesirable products.

Tips for Eliminating Cellulite

The process of eliminating cellulite is one that most women find intimidating and sometimes even impossible. True, cellulite is a skin problem that can be incredibly difficult to live with and even harder to deal with, but the fact of the matter is that there are some very effective options available to you here.

What it is

Cellulite is basically a modernized term for collections of fat that push against the connective tissues that are located just under the skin, and as a result this causes a dimpling or puckering of the skin. There are many possible causes of cellulite, including genetics, poor diet, and lack of exercise.

Eliminating Cellulite

There are many ways that a person can go about eliminating cellulite. Physical activities such as exercise and a strict diet are going to be the first step, because this will get your body healthier and almost immediately loosen up the fat blockage in your body. There are also some ultramodern techniques which will be helpful to you here, including liposuction which can drastically reduce layers of cellulite.

Exercise is also very effective for eliminating cellulite, and not only this but it will also keep you looking and feeling young by adding muscle tone and improving circulation. Weight training is one form of exercise that has proven to be particularly helpful for dealing with cellulite, as it helps to enhance and shape the tone of the body and not only get rid of present cellulite but prevent it from recurring in the future.

There are also much more serious treatment methods for eliminating cellulite, such as the cellulite laser treatment. This is a relatively new procedure, one that is combined with deep skin massage and skin smoothing with flat paddles in order to offer the best possible results. It is completely non-invasive and there is no recovery time involved which is a major advantage.

The main downfall to this procedure is that it is quite costly, and because it is considered to be a cosmetic procedure it is not covered by insurance and therefore not accessible to the average person. Getting rid of cellulite is possible, but not necessarily easy. Especially if you have been dealing with cellulite for a long period of time or it is very noticeable, it may take a bit of time to decide on the best treatment for your condition. Remember that the only real way to reduce cellulite is to reduce overall body fat, so make sure that you keep your body in the best condition.
